Connecting by camera

Only cameras we have verified on real hardware are listed, with the steps for each. The steps that are the same for every camera are on How to use.

Canon EOS R8

Verified with firmware 3-1.4.0. Menu names can be worded slightly differently depending on the camera's language and firmware.

LAN connection (Pro)

First time on this device (once per device)

  1. BothPut the camera and this device on the same network.
  2. CameraOn the camera, start registering a device from “Add a device”.
  3. AppWhen the camera says pairing is starting, choose the camera in “LAN connection” in the app. That registers it. If the camera asks you to confirm, follow its prompt.Whether you press OK or see this device’s name on the camera is not checked yet.

From the second time

  1. CameraOn the camera, choose this device in “Connect to EOS Utility”.
  2. AppChoose the camera in “LAN connection” in the app.

Pairing is needed once for each device the app is on.

If the app says “This device isn't registered on the camera yet”, pairing hasn’t been done. Start from “First time on this device”.

Verified on: Mac, iPhone and iPad (photos received).

USB-C

  1. CameraNo setting is needed on the camera.
  2. BothConnect with a USB-C cable and tap Connect in the app.

Even with RAW+JPEG, only the JPEG arrives (the RAW stays on the card).

When plugged in, the rear screen shows its computer-connection display, then returns to the shooting view once the app connects.

Verified on: Mac and iPad (photos received). Not yet verified on iPhone.

Wi-Fi (the camera's access point)

  1. CameraOn the camera, choose “Add a device” in “Connect to EOS Utility”.
  2. CameraChoose “Easy connection” in camera access point mode. The camera shows the access point name (SSID) and password.
  3. AppIn the app, enter the access point name and password and tap “Connect to this AP”.Whether the camera’s QR code works is not checked yet.
  4. CameraThe first time on this device, the camera shows this device’s name (starting with FrameLeap) and asks to allow pairing. Press OK.
  5. BothOnce connected, the photos you take arrive in the app.

Photos don’t arrive while the camera is set to Connect to smartphone. Connect using Connect to EOS Utility.

The EOS R8 uses 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, so it is slower than USB-C. To see bursts right away, use USB-C.

Verified on: Mac and iPad (photos received). Not yet verified on iPhone.

Wi-Fi (FTP)

The EOS R8 has no FTP function. Use Wi-Fi, LAN or USB connection instead.

Sony α7R V (ILCE-7RM5)

Verified with firmware v2.01. Menu names can be worded slightly differently depending on the camera's language and firmware.

LAN connection (Pro)

  1. BothPut the camera and this device on the same network (same router).
  2. CameraOn the camera, start PC Remote with the Wi-Fi access point connection.
  3. AppPick the camera in “LAN connection”. On iPhone it isn’t listed, so use “Can’t find it? Enter the IP address”.Whether it is listed on iPad is not checked yet.
  4. AppThe first time only, enter the user name and password shown in Access Authen. Info on the camera.

Verified on: Mac, iPhone and iPad (photos received).

USB-C

  1. CameraSet the USB connection mode to PC Remote.
  2. CameraSet the save destination to PC+Camera.
  3. CameraSet RAW+J PC save image to JPEG only.
  4. BothConnect with a USB-C cable and tap Connect in the app.

Verified on: Mac and iPhone (photos received). Not yet verified on iPad.

Wi-Fi (the camera's access point)

  1. CameraOn the camera, start its Wi-Fi access point (the name starts with DIRECT-) and show the QR code.Menu location not checked yet.
  2. AppTap “Scan a QR code to set up” and point at the QR. Once read, the app goes on to connect (iPhone and iPad show a system prompt).
  3. AppIf it can’t be read, enter the access point name and password shown on the camera and tap “Connect to this AP”.

While on the camera’s Wi-Fi, the Mac has no internet.

Wi-Fi (FTP)

  1. AppTurn on “Run the FTP server” in the app.
  2. CameraGo to [Network] → [Wi-Fi Settings] → [Access Point Manual Registration] and join the same Wi-Fi (router) as this device.
  3. CameraIn [FTP Transfer Func.] → [Server Setting], enter the values shown in the app into a slot such as “Server 1”.
  4. CameraTurn [FTP Transfer Func.] → [Auto FTP Transfer] on. With RAW+JPEG, set [RAW+J FTP Transfer Target] to “JPEG Only”.

Verified on: Mac (photos received). Not yet verified on iPhone or iPad.

The list of verified bodies is on Supported cameras. We never say a camera “connects” until we have checked it.
